IEEE Canada Power Quality Scholarship

General   One scholarship each year, value $1,500.

Background   The IEEE Sections in Alberta (Northern Canada and Southern Alberta) organized the "Annual Alberta Exposition and Conference on Power Quality Issues" in 1988.   The conference ran successfully from 1988 to 1995 and during that time generated a considerable surplus.   The organizers of the conference wanted to set up an annual Power Quality Scholarship which would be available to an IEEE student member in full time attendance at either the University of Alberta or the University of Calgary.   The trustees of the conference transfered these funds as a directed gift to the IEEE Canadian Foundation to establish and administer this scholarship.

Purpose   To recognize excellence in students who demonstrate an awareness of power quality issues and who indicate their intent to pursue a professional career in the Electric Power Industry.

Eligibility   All IEEE student members in full time attendance at either the University of Alberta or the University of Calgary, who are in their penultimate undergraduate year and whose program of study includes courses in electric power engineering. There should not be more than one candidate from each University (University of Alberta and University of Calgary).

Basis of Selection
Individuals will be evaluated based on (a) the nomination form submitted by the faculty member and (b) the information form completed by the nominated student - and include the following criteria:
1. Level of involvement and sucess in electric power related courses
2. Knowledge of Power Quality issues
3. Expectation of a future career in the electric power area
4. Perceived value of this scholarship

The Decision Process   Faculty members (preferably those who are involved in the power area) are requested to nominate suitable candidates.   The Grants Committee of the IEEE Canadian Foundation will review and rank the nominations, and forward their recomendations to the Board of Directors of the IEEE Canadian Foundation, who will determine the recipient at their first meeting of each year, normally held in early April.

Payment   Each recipient's University will be contacted by the Foundation regarding the awarding of the scholarship and financial arrangements.   Payment will be made directly to the educational institution, to be credited to the student's account.

Certificate   A framed certificate will be presented to the Scholarship holder by the Section Chair at a suitable IEEE (Branch or Section) Meeting.

Nominations   The deadline for receipt of forms is March 15.   The recipient will be notified within a week following the Board meeting.   Please use the linked online forms "applications and nominations" link on the left side of this page.
